‘Stupidity has no medicine and is
incurable,’ opines Bhartruhari in this lovely śloka.
If a house is on fire, the fire can be doused with water … There is a cure for the fury of fire …
One can shield oneself from the blazing heat of the sun, using an umbrella … There is a cure that protects us from the heat of the sun …
‘शूर्प (śūrpa) is the word used by Bhartruhari for an umbrella here; this word,
in Sanskrit, actually denotes a basket used for winnowing or sifting grain
(say, rice)…
The word for umbrella in Sanskrit, on the
other hand, is ‘अतपत्र(atapatra)’ ... In the good old days, messengers would accompany Royals
with umbrellas to shade them from the sun … This word came into vogue, with the
umbrellas being used by Rulers .. ‘अतत पत्र(atata patra)’ comes from ‘अतप (atapa)’ or protection from the heat in
sunlight … In the earlier times, atapatra used to be made from palm leaves, not
cloth. The ‘अतपत्र(atapatra)’ would open out just as an umbrella would…
This sort of an
umbrella is used in the present in the processions of deities, taken out from
temples …
An elephant in rage
too, can be assuaged and brought under control, with a mahout using a hook to
prod at a nodal point behind its ear… In His Varāha incarnation, Bhagavan too
landed a ‘कर्णताडनात (karṇatādanāt) i.e. blow behind the ear to
kill the ‘आदिदैत्य(ādidaitya)...’ Generally, all animals have a nodal or pressure point behind the ear, that can be
extremely painful … Even an enraged elephant can be
controlled with a hook or baton …
Cows and donkeys, when they refuse to
heed to us and turn upon us or when they chase us; using a staff, they too can
be brought under control …
The scriptures ordain that there is
medicine for all ailments; on application or consumption of such medicines, any disease can be cured …
The scriptures also prescribe certain
mantras (incantations or spells) or processes that can help us detoxify anyone
who may have consumed poison or, for that matter, suffers a snake bite …
In this way the scriptures lay down a
remedy for every ailment or problem i.e. there is a medicine for every
affliction, as they say, but, for stupidity or foolishness, there is no
antidote or medicine … in short, there is ‘no linctus for the ludicrous lot
...’
