In the ten ślōkās prior to this,
Bhartruhari had elaborated the traits of fools; from the present one, he moves
over to the status of the literati in the society …
The learned never engage in baseless
banter. When they talk, everything is backed by the śastrās (scriptures) (तदुक्तं ब्रह्माण्डे, तदुक्तं स्कान्दे …/ taduktaṁ brahmāṇḍe, taduktaṁ skānde…); in that way, their
speech is backed and decorated with the ennobling thoughts of the śastrās.
Their choice of diction, delivery style etc., makes listening a pleasure and in general, the spoken
language is enriched by their speech. As they understand the nuances of
language very well, there is clarity in their expressions; the listener finds the
language attractive and melodious to the ear and thereby, the content, easy to
digest. It is only such scholars that can hand-down knowledge of the
traditional texts to their students… In other words, they would be able deliver
talks, lectures that enable students to understand the true meaning of the śastrās. Not all can do that; it is not necessary that
one would be able to pass on all knowledge possessed by oneself. Understanding
any subject is an art … teaching someone else, what is understood by one, is
another art … All those with good understanding, will not be gifted in speech
to teach what they know to others … Bhartruhari points out that the society is
teeming with this latter class of scholars …
There is a great saying from
(Bhavanti tē
sabhyatamāḥ vipaścitān manōrathaṁ vāci nivēśayanti)." ‘One who is able to convey what is on
one’s mind; one is indeed a great aritist … it is also a great art to do so’ …
is what is said by the ancient poet ‘Bhāravi.’ Therefore, ability to speak, is
an exclusive art by itself …
If any state keeps such reknowned
scholars poor, if they live in penury, then such a state or country is indeed
governed by foolish rulers … It exhibits the imprudence or inertia of the ruler
of such a state or country …
If one were to apply this ślōka of
Bhartruhari to our times, then in such states or countries where those who govern the state or country, tend cater to a particular group, caste or sect but neglect such
scholars, it would highlight the foolishness and inertia of such a chief
minister …
The loss thereof is to the state or
the country and not to the scholar … the King who meted out the injustice is at
a loss, because scholars are rich even without money. They need not fear
anyone, and without obligation to money-power, they can lead respectable lives
on the strength of their own abilities …
Bhartruhari highlights the exalted status, respectability
of scholars through an apt illustration … scholars are like the self-resplendent
diamond … If there is one such diamond, highly valued and if such diamond is priced
lower than its intrinsic value, as the examiner does not know its value, does
the diamond lose its value? … The diamond would never fall in value, any day.
The lower valuation is the fault of the valuer and not of the diamond…
If
gems are priced lower than their intrinsic value, the fault lies in the
incompetence of the examiner, not with the gems …
This
does not merely apply to monarchs alone, instead it applies to all those in the
society who neglect the scholars/ learned… it is thereby also the
responsibility of the society at large, to recognize its scholars and give them
the respect due to them …
As the popular saying goes, ‘What
does a mule know about the musk’s fragrance?’ … it is ignoramuses and fools who
are to be blamed for their inability to spot the eminence of their scholars and
the learned.
