Gangā, descending
from the heavens, ‘fell’ on to the head of Śiva; this is deemed to be a slide
in her position. Thence, she went on to ‘fall’ on the Himālayas. Himālayas form the higher reaches of the
earth; from the higher ranges of the Himālayas, flowing as multiple streams,
Gangā descended to the earth, fell lower and continuing her flow, merged into
the ocean … Much the same is the degradation in the lives of fools, says
Bhartruhari.
Our Acharyaru has opined that Bhartruhari’s comparison of the slide in the
lives of fools to the descending of Ganga, is not very convincing … Poetically
too, this symbolism is not harmonious …
Gangā is called स्वर्गंगा (svargaṅgā). From the abode of
gods, Gangā descended to the earth i.e. it fell onto the
crown of Śiva. ‘To descend,’ implies fall into a bad place. How can anyone
construe the landing of Gangā from the heavens onto the head of Śiva as
‘descending,’ then? The legendary Kannada poet Dr. Da Rā Bendre, has however
explained this process insightfully … He has said, ‘This does not amount to the
slide of Gangā, but her incarnation … She came over from the heavens for our
redemption’ … This view of Bendre transforms it to an ‘incarnation of Gangā.’
Gangā’s movement
from the heavens to earth, leads to its slide from a higher position to a lower
one, those who are profligate, slide to degradation in living, and they would
never be able to regain positions of eminence, is the message of Bhartruhari
here.
Our Acharyaru has
pointed out that it would augur well to disregard the metaphor of Ganga but
sift the message of degradation that Bhratruhari gives us here.
There is no
question of attaching ‘prudence’ to the waters of Gangā … water is an inert
substance and it’s natural tendency is to flow from higher to lower levels
…
Gangā descended to
the earth with a purpose … to redeem Bhagīrata, the childless ruler of Ayodhya,
from the sins of his forefathers. Gangā’s action also brought salvation to the
60,000 sons of Sagara.
Gangā, in the
modern day, is no longer pristine … We continue to dump all kinds of waste into
her flowing waters and have made it unfit for the purifying ritual of ‘Gangā snāna.’ Vedavyāsaru had stated in the
Dvāpara era itself, that 5000 years post the Dvāpara era, ‘Gangā would cease to
exist on the earth … she will return to the heavens.’ Our Acharyaru has
reflected that these words seem to be ringing true now …
