In
this shloka, through incredulous comparisons, Bhartruhari concludes that it is
impossible to turn around obdurate fools …
On
striving, one may be able to wring out oil from sand … for a wayfarer in a
desert, it might be possible to slake his thirst from a mirage …
Ever
seen a rabbit with horns? On wandering the earth, he may be able to discover a
rabbit with horns too …
A
rabbit with horns
Moisture
from mirage
Oil
from sand
These
impossibilities might turn possible but convincing a fool is certainly
impossible …
Bhartruhari’s words remind us of similar sense echoed in
Sarvajna’s wisdom filled verses …
“mūrkhaṅge
bud'dhiyanu nūrkāla hēḷidare,
gōrkallu mēle maLesuridante” (Wise counsel drilled hundred times in a fool’s ears, is like
rainfall over a boulder).
Implies
that right from Bhartruhari’s times (it is estimated that he lived in the 4thand/
or 5th centuries CE), the reign of fools has been preserved intact
on this earth!! Fools have pervaded across all time periods … They populate our
world to in greater count …
