This is a verse in which Bhartruhari painfully reflects on the
anguish in his heart …
He wonders, who would be the recipient of these subhāṣitas (words of good counsel) that he has set forth to
compose? The learned, who are capable of understanding the intent of the subhāṣitas, relish the same upon understanding them; by ‘learned,’
it is meant either scholars or the wise only … The nature of such scholars,
however, is impregnated with spite (jealousy) … The delight of one scholar most
often results in scorn (envy), in other scholars.
paṇḍitaṁ dr̥ṣṭvā śvānavat gurgurāyatē | parōtkarṣā sahittaṁ asūyaṁ|madvaśō nāyaṁ iti matsara īritaḥ| - these are the various ways in
which jealousy is reflected). Thus placed, scholars do not easily appreciate
others of their ilk … Therefore, it bodes well, if these subhāṣitas elude the scholars. Alas, this is the lot of the
learned.
In the good old days(preceding the times of Bhartruhari),
poets enjoyed the patronage of Kings … Now however, Kings are steeped in
arrogance, ego fills their heart, as such, ‘Subhāṣitas penned by ordinary folk
like me is not in their sight,’ … Hence, he (Bhartruhari) states that his
position neither finds comfort in the learned, nor does it enjoy patronage of the
Kings …
In case one were to expect commiseration in this matter by the
remaining lot, namely commoners, ‘they are incapable of making sense of what is
uttered by me …
Therefore, who should I compose these subhāṣitas for? … There is none that would be joyous on
hearing them …’ He laments thereby, ‘Subhāṣitas which arise in my mind,
would someday, wither away with my own body…’ These are problems that confound Bhartruhari
prior to his composing the subhāṣitas …
In this way, post the expression of his anguish, Bhartruhari proceeded
with composing his subhāṣitas. This is similar to the experience of
Bhavabhuti. Bhavabhuti had expressed that even as none of his contemporaries
appreciated his work, his writings were for those who may be born in the future,
who might see its worth … In a like manner, Bhartruhari too set forth composing
his subhāṣitas, reposing his faith that future generations may
give these compositions, the merit that is truly theirs …
