The great commentator Patanjali has stated that an
auspicious invocation should be the precursor to any sacred composition or
text, as a dedicated recounting of God. This would help in the unhindered
progression of the composition, as well as in its harmonious completion. Just
as it is said, "मंगलादीनि, मंगलमध्यानि, मंगलांतानि - maṅgalādīni, maṅgalamadhyāni, maṅgalāntāni,"
our ancients always desired the auspicious commencement, continuation and
culmination of any work.
Not just that, they also were eager that those who read the
work should be ushered into auspiciousness. It is in the context of these
guidelines laid down by the ancients, that Bhartruhari has presented, this
auspicious invocation to the śatakatraya (trilogy of shatakas or verse
hundreds).
Such incantations essentially are of three types. In the
words of Daṇḍi, “आशीः नमस्क्रिया
वस्तुनिर्देशोवा- āśīḥ namaskriyā vastunirdēśōvā,” … the obeisance form,
blessings form or pertaining to an object. These were the three types that came
into vogue from earlier times …
Here Bhartruhari adopts the obeisance form of auspicious
incantation …
Bhatruhari composed three śatakas (compositions of hundred
verses, each) - Nīti Śataka, Śr̥ṅgāra Śataka and Vairāgya Śataka. This shloka
forms the invocation for each of these three śatakas.
God has no divisions in respect of direction or time. Which
means he exists across all three epochs (past, present and future), is infinite
in all dimensions and a light form that is untouched by ignorance.
God is purely accessible to our innate blissful awareness,
in the form pristine unalloyed intellect …
It is only when we experience our own true nature does He
become the object of our experience, appearing as a cool streak of light.
Bhartruhari here pays obeisance to one Who is Śānta - Śaṁ +
anta i.e. ultimate form of blissfulness or the infinite peak of happiness,
joyful awareness, unending aura of light!
