As mentioned in the previous śloka, the society has its
measure of fools; it is a difficult task to mend their ways through any subhāṣita; having said so, Bhartruhari, in this
succeeding śloka, states that it is impossible to correct their ways …
The crocodile is also called ‘śiśumāra’ in Sanskrit, which
means, an animal that kills children… If children are found around its watery
habitat, it swallows them and as such is known as śiśumāra …
From the wide
open jaws of a crocodile, entangled between its sharp and crooked teeth, if one
spots a gem (we may presume that such a gem got deposited there, as the remnant
of a snake swallowed by the crocodile), it may be possible to retrieve the gem,
even if it proves challenging, from the menacing jaws of the crocodile … This
is a difficult but not impossible task …
In just the same way, it might also be possible to tide over a
sea swelled by raging tsunamis …
A snake is an earless animal but is capable of appreciating
our mind vibes … what humans may achieve through diligent practice, ‘mind
reading,’ the snake can do it naturally … When such an animal senses danger
from us, it spreads its hood and prepares to strike us with a hiss … It is also
possible to adorn on one’s crown, as a garland of flowers, such an agitated
snake … Even this, is not impossible but merely a difficult task …
Using an incantation called ‘maṇimantrauṣadha’ it would be possible to tame a snake … There used to be forest dwelling tribe called
‘Jāṅgalika’
which was capable to preventing a snake bite toxin from spreading through the
body, chanting certain mantras …
As such, all
the three types illustrated above are difficult but performable … however, it would
be impossible to please, self-opinionated fools, who reel under the delusion
that their view is the only right one.
Thus it is not possible
to mend the ways of the imprudent, says Bhartruhari …
