There is a ‘vyāla’ i.e., a musth or rogue elephant, that
cannot be controlled by a mahout … When in this condition, water drips from its forehead …
In such state even seasoned mahouts refrain from going near
them … The elephant does not permit tethering, trying to chain it can
prove fatal to anyone attempting it …
One who tries
to counsel a fool is actually doing nothing more than trying to chain such a
rogue elephant using the tender stalk of a lotus …
The attempt to reform a fool is also like the saga of those trying to polish hard diamond using the flowers of the Lebbeck tree as the flowers look abrasive!
It
is also akin to infusing a drop of honey or a dash of sugar syrup to the salty
waters of the sea, in order to sweeten it – the act of reforming a fool through
sweet talk.
In the first
place those who make such attempts are themselves fools and those who think
that good counsel from a subhāṣita is all that is needed to reform a fool are celebrated
fools themselves …
There
is an idiom in Kannada for this –
‘Kōṇana
munde kinnari bārisida hāge - Playing the fiddle in a buffalo’s presence’ … is presenting
good advice to a fool …
