Meter: This verse is in the Śārdūla vikrīḍita meter which is 19 x 4 = 76 syllables.

This sloka shows us that embellishment comes from oration that is backed by learning/ knowledge and also that, in our country, vesture/ ornamentation used to be gender neutral i.e. similar for both men and women, in the good old days… (long hair, coiffure, the wearing of flowers etc., …)

In the ancient times, jewelry used in ornamentation namely bracelets, bangles, amulets, ear rings, waist straps, white pearl necklaces, the Candrahāra etc., These did not decorate a scholar … Good features are not reflected in our wearing of ornaments to look good but, in the ornaments looking good when we wear them …

Bathing, application of sandal paste (these days a wide variety of perfumes are used), various hairstyles, using various flowers to decorate the hair on one’s head … None of these would define the adornments of scholars …

In terms of types of hairdo, in the olden days, brahmaṇas had four variants … Hairstyle signified the Vēda that related to them …

The Ṛgvēdis had a tuft on the crown as much as a cow’s hoof; the rest were clean shaven … Yajurvēdis used to sport a crescent like dressing in the front and long hair at the back of the head … Sāmavēdis used to have hair much the same as women have in length and quantum … Atharvavēdis used to have their heads clean shaven …

Kshtriyas, sported long hair that used to be parted on the top into two side flanks, resembling the wings of a crow, that is how in Rāmāyaṇa, Rāma is called ‘काक पक्ष धरः (Kāka pakṣa dharaḥ)
All these hairstyles were merely connected to the Vēdas … Therefore these cannot be considered as decorative for men …

True decoration for man is his oration … When Rāmacandra first ran into Hanumān in the forest, “How wonderful is his speech; In his entire long speech there was not a single wrong word uttered,” is how he appreciated Hanumān out of joy … Speech of that order is truly a jewel in a human’s persona …

To a learned one or erudite one, cultured or properly shaped speech is ornamentation … (वाग्भूषणं भूषणम् vāgbhūṣaṇaṁ bhūṣaṇam) …  In Rāmāyaṇa, Valmiki addresses Hanumān as ‘Lakṣaṇa,’ which means one whose speech is full of good features and flows flawlessly … “That is a true jewel, the rest wear out, are stolen, lost, broken, if like flowers they become stale and perish; however, speech that flows from the deep learning of the Vedas, is an imperishable ornament!’
